Retainers and When They are Needed
A retainer is a device used in orthodontic treatment which allows your teeth to “retain” their new shape after braces. Retainers are often used after the removal of braces to prevent teeth from returning to their old configuration. Our Los Angeles dentist can discuss the need for retainers and their proper use with you.
Braces are common orthodontic treatments which push teeth into their proper position. Many people have braces, and they can be made from several types of materials. The most common braces are made of metal, with metal wires holding the devices in place which can be tightened to adjust the fit.
Porcelain braces are another common type of device that use porcelain fusers, which are less damaging to teeth than the metal type. The porcelain fusers sit on the teeth, and metal wires connect them and provide the proper tension to push teeth into place.
One of the best types of braces are Invisalign aligners, which are invisible trays that gently push teeth into their proper position. Invisalign allows you to get results quickly, without the embarrassment of visible metal or porcelain braces.
No matter what type of braces you have, a retainer may be in order after your treatment is finished. Our Los Angeles cosmetic dentist will determine if you need a retainer, and if so, how long you should wear it. You need to follow the dentist’s instructions closely, or your new alignment may be jeopardized. Wear your retainer at all times except when the dentist says it can be removed.
