Tooth Discoloration Causes and Treatments
Your smile may well be one of the first things people notice about you. Teeth can become discolored for a number of reasons, however, leading you to become less satisfied with your smile over time. You may even lose self-confidence. If your teeth are stained or discolored, our Los Angeles dentist can help you determine the best treatment plan to restore them to their original luster and brightness.
Aging may be one of the most common reasons for tooth discoloration, but foods and beverages are also major contributors to stained enamel. Coffee and tea, soft drinks and wines, berries, tomato sauces, and curries may all leave stains on your teeth. Tobacco, either chewing or smoking, also stains teeth.
Zoom whitening can dramatically improve the appearance of stained teeth, brightening them by as much as eight shades in a less than an hour. The Zoom procedure is performed in our office, using a special bleaching gel combined with a light to penetrate deep within the surface of the teeth and break up the stains
Some stains may not respond to traditional teeth whitening methods. Tetracycline and certain other antibiotics as well as excessive fluoride consumption during tooth formation may leave intractable stains on the teeth. Although these stains cannot be bleached away, they can be covered using porcelain veneers or Lumineers, wafer-thin shells that bond directly to the natural teeth to whiten teeth and improve the overall look of your smile.
